the roads i've cycled so far:
- western tibetan road (kashgar-ali-saga-mendong-lhasa)
- friendship hw
- yunnan (lao boarder-simao-dali zhongdian)
- yunnan (zhongdian) - lhasa (southern yunnan/sichuan-tibet road)
- lhasa (nearbye) - nakchu (on small road)
- nakshu – yushu - xining (one part of the northern sichuan-tibet rd)
- xining – lhanzou – yinchuan - beijing
- beijing - erenhot (mongolian boarder), 2 different roads
- hong kong (train from kunming)

road conditions:

- most of the main roads tend to be paved in china, of course tibet is a big exception (see tibetan information for more details), chinese usually build big wide roads with enough room for you and your small bike
- the traffic is not too bad, and it's manly trucks that are on the roads
- in the north of china the traffic is heavier than in the south, coal trucks may be a problem in some part of the road (around beijing)
- i try to avoid as much as possible the main roads in the mainland of china and cycle on the small roads that are often good and the traffic is much less!
- it's not seldom that the roads are in construction, then get ready for a bad ride as this means dirt roads, maybe worse than it was before and a huge amount of trucks - so a lot of dust for you ....enjoy!

visas:
-
chinese visas vary in duration (and also in price) depending where you ask for them.
- the price depends mainly on the time you're ready to wait for it. urgent = same day, express = next day or the day after, normal = 3 - 4 working days
- as a general rule: never say you want to go to tibet or in a sensitive area in china, play the stupid tourist! beijing shanghai xi'an... are your destinations within the embassy!

here few place i applied for visa:
- france: 3 months visa, no problem, i didn't ask for a double entry so i go a simple one
- india (dehli): got a 2 months visa there quite easy too
-pakistan: got a 3 months visa there double entry
- tadjikistan: got a 3 months visa there, 50 $ for a 2 days service (30 $ for one week) didn't ask for a double entry but probably possible, 50 dollars, here suppose to be a bad place in fact was a very good one, they try to insist for that i write only 2 months at the reception but then asking 3 months they gave me 3 months
- thailand: i got a 2 months double entries there easy but 3 months seems more difficult, even if i met some people who told me than they get a 3 months there, for me wasn't possible!
- honk kong: here is the spot to get chinese visa (april/may 2007 up date). i got a six months multiple entry there for 550 hong kong dollars (55euros) in one day!
- you can also get a one year visa for 1700hk $ (170 euros) also multiple entry but it would be easier to get it if you already got a months visa before, if not no worries it seems like every thing is possible here! i asked mine at the travellers hostel in chunking mansion (16th floors) very easy going.
- mongolia (ulan baatar) = 1 month (no more) visa for 30 $ (50$ for 2/3 days service, 60$ for same day service), really unfriendly embassy. one french, one chilien, one greek, 2 australien than i know get there visa  refused for writing "lhasa" or "urungi" as there destination, keep low profile and say your going to beijing - shanghai' xi'an....what ever your plans are!

good to know:
an agency base in shanghai ( www.visainchina.com ) is able to do almost everything for your visa while you're inside the country so it means mainly extensions. this means it is possible to get a 6 months (1 year) extension all over china (including lhasa), it's something that would have helped many people!!! and it avoids the trip to hong kong if you need a long term visa! but it is not cheap!!!!

money/cost:

- 1 euro = 10.3 CNY / chinese yuan = +/-10 hong kong $ = 0.7 us $
-
good news now (since more than a year) you can use your credit card in the chinese atm but most of the time maximum 2000 yuan (200 euros) so depending of how often you want to get some, it can cost you many times the commission in your country (if there is commission, for me = yes!)
- you can also get money directly in the bank without limit (except the one of your bank and of course the one of your bank account) and that the commission is 3%
- you can change dollars or euros in the china bank or private changer (check commissions)
- travelling in china is according to me quite cheap, especially if you camp.
- the food in the countryside is very cheap on the local markets: vegetable, rice, breads....
- for tibet you will probably have to taste the dry noodle soup witch is also very cheap
- so while camping you can expect 1 to 2 dollars a days, eating like a prince
- then internet is also cheap in china (2 yuan per hours so 0.2 euro per hour)
- and then, when your going to the main city your budget will explode
- expect to pay from 20 to 50 yuan for a cheap dorm bed
- most of the guest houses/hostels/hotels are clean and quite a good value for this price
- hong kong has a special status as it's much more expensive, so is beijing, shanghai....

in between the wall mart and ren min xi lu there is very cheap bike shop with some worker outside, for the reparation of the last chance maybe....

- hong kong:
flying ball, unit 1 g/f, por yen blg, 478 castle peach road, chung sha wan, kowloon\ - suppose to be one of the best bike shop in asia......expensive price
in many major cities you can expect to find a giant bike shop with correct stuff

beijing:
- one really good bike shop is situated near the worker stadium (east of it), it is a tiny one but there are all the things you need (only best quality.... including 36 spokes sun rim) and the guys are really good mechanics and wheel builders. no english. i got on well with the owner and had some really good prices, cheaper than the giant bike shop
- another big giant bike shop is on guozhijian street (south side) (near the second ring road, running east-west), it sells all you can't find in the other one mainly the cheap shimano parts and a better choice of tires. the prices are more expensive than in the other one.

In many major cities you can expect to find a giant bike shop with correct stuff

accommodation:

-
as usual my favorite hotel is my tent!
- all cities have hotels or hostels or guest houses, the price depends of the quality of course but you can always find something from 20 to 50 yuan with good facilities in china
- in tibet the quality will be lower for a higher price
- in beijing: minimum 60 yuan for a dorm bed (far east hostel for example) but i haven't stayed in any of them!

maps:
here some map i used:
- tibet: gizi map 1:2000000, ok if you stay on the main road, don t expect it to be always right, don't expect to find all the villages shown on the map, and specially don t expect to find all the roads shown on the map!
- china road atlas: definitely the best map i've used in china, it's a bible, quite accurate for the distance and the size of the cities, one negative point is that it's all in chinese, but this is also a really positive point as you can very easy ask your direction pointing it on the map (better to use with an english map in the background) (thanks a lot to shao who gave it to me)
- southern china 1:500000, nelles maps, correct, with this and the chinese atlas you won't be lost in the south part of china!
- china 1:3800000, "international travel map", a general map of china, perfect to plan or to use the chinese atlas, probably not enough alone
in central beijing on wangfujing (pedestrian area) there is a big english book shop where you can find some lonely planets, some basic maps and of course books

internet facilities:
- in almost every citie in china you will find an internet cafe (look for the character looking like "xx" in a box ) with good connection and for cheap prices
- the negative thing is that some sites are blocked and that the computers are many in chinese
- in hk cyber cafes are expensive (10 to 30 hk $) but you can go to a library (the one in the "city hall" on honk kong island near the "central" ferry station is quite a good place, harcourt road)

kashgar information:

-
hotel: seman hotel (classic) dorm 30 yuan with bathroom, 20yuan without (with a bike i would advice the first one witch is a better value according to me)
on seman street! every body knows it
- internet: in the street (right when you get out of the seman) on the left hand side, big cyber cafe for 2 yuan = good; internet inside the seman = very expensive
- bike shop: giant bike shop: 10 mn by bike from the seman hotel (right out the hotel till round about, then renmin donglu (the one towards mao statue and china bank, not the one straight just left to it), then right at the first light (jiefang nanlu), then the second left (second hospital making the left corner), then 500m left hand side big giant sign, outdoor shop just in front) = n153 xin min road , if you continue further on this road you will reach the merida bike shop. both of them are good bike shop, the giant one have more stuff and the guy with glasses in it is a brilliant mechanic - nb next to the outdoor shop after the supermarket really good restaurant don t miss it!
- bank: bank of china, change plus credit card advance, atm max 1000 yuan, 10yuan = 0.98euros

beijing-information:
for sight seeing, hotel (i didn't stay in a hotel!), and so on, check lonely planet!

here some few things that can be useful and are not in the lonely planet:

good bike shop:
- big giant one (classic in china) on jiaodoakou street (north east of forbidden city), you can't miss it if you pass by the street, all the spare parts that you can imagine but according to me not the kind of bike shop that fit with travelling cycling. (no 36 spokes rims, some good tires), english spoken

- one small but really good one, north of the worker stadium  (on the left side of the stadium entering by the north, gongrentiyuchang beilu  every spare part that you need, good mechanic and wheels builder. much more my kind of bike shop, but no english spoken

- outdoor shop:
on beisanhuan zhonglu, west of the crossing with deshengmenwai dajie (near shuangxiu park), on the south side of the rd, 3 big outdoor shop with every thing but at a price.

ROAD BOOKS - information:


distances
the distances are always in kilometers, according to my speedometer (TOPKEA at the moment) witch is maybe generous of about 2% compared to the kilometer-markers. When possible there is the KMM of the road BUT, those kilometer are not always right either and depending the road, the distance of the speedometer differes (sometime 2% difference, sometime 4%, sometimes -2%....). i never tryed to make the speedometer and KMM distance look the same, i simply wrote down what i saw on both of them. for the speedometer i most of the time took the approximate distance, so it can explain some differences to (for ex 2.3 get 2 or 2.5 exept if i feel it s importante to be precise). the best to limitated the difference is to use the information location from location. Some time some small detour (lunch away from rd, water....) are not off the calcul so this can also add to the difference in the end. Keep in mind than it's just indication! although i did my best to make it as accurated as possible some mistakes may have occured (writing in the rain, re-typing....). I'm in advance extremely sorry for this!

altitudes
the watch altitude (sunto vector watch) depends on the pressure, so the difference with reality can be important depending the weather. Generally speaking it's not too bad and will give a good information. For the GPS, some time it take ages before the "right" altitude appears, and i m not always patient enough!

GPS
I wrote down what seemed to me the most important points, but not all the rd due to battery saving as i really seldom go to hotels.

camping
on some rd i indicated my camp, not that i think that they are the best place (far from this!) but 1. it may give an idea of the speed (note that i'm quite a slow and lazy cycler) and 2. it helps me to make the rd book!!!

road condition
this is not totaly objective! some time in bad days the rd doesn't look good even if it s asphalt!
so here to give you an idea about my classification:
- asphalt: the best
- good rd: no breaking in down hills
- ok rd: acceptable, you ride without thinking to much of it
- so/so rd: you break in downhill and can't ride without looking at the rd all the time, and your ass notices it!
- bad rd: means what it means!
- very bad rd: you push your bike...
- corrugated: you'll learn quickly what it means if you don't know yet: stony, gravel, sandy, muddy....

general
note that i don't write every thing and than things that would have been important to you at a time were not for me at the same place, sorry for this. most of all keep in mind that rd condition change as PSB rules, and that that information is just information.

PSB
when i see a PSB in the region i most of the times mention it, this means that if you stay in the city and are not suppose to be there, there is chance that the PSB visits you in the eve or even in the day. open barrier" means that there was a CP but nobody cared about me passing it. military CP are generally speaking safe.

travellers hostel, chucking mension (end of nathan road) block A, 16th floor, 60 HK$/night in dorm
they can arrange a long term visa for 550 HK$ for 6 months (next day)
for a one year one it's 1700 HK $, but it wold be easier if you already get a 6 months visa before, but if not, it's still possible
BUT the visa situation can change from day to day in HK


xining - beijing:


about 2000km to reach the chinese capital, the ride can't be considered as difficult but i would have wanted it easier, i guess i was tired!
some parts are really nice (inner mongolia step) some are really unpleasant (coal factories and coal truck that will make you completely black in the eve and feel like if you had been picking up the coal yourself in the mine!
there is never a problem for the water, and there is plenty of restaurants (where you can get water) and food
many cities on the way, and it's all paved

o ne of the big dangers were the bees, they transport them by trucks, and when a bees truck passes by it can be really awful!
I've been attacked as other cyclers (i met one chinese who finished in hospital being unconscient)
if they start to turn around you, do nothing, stop and let them explore all they want, even if it can be really unpleasant to have a hundred bees around you. if you kick one of them (only one) you'll be in big trouble!
It's my advice to do as you want but remember than they can kill you, a mosquito net hat or some thing to protect your head (they only sting in the head) would not be a luxory!

e ntering beijing was so easy and i don't complain about it!

o n the last part i left the rd 109, tired by the traffic, maybe it takes longer in time and km but it's more quiet (in some parts only!)

it took me about 20 days to do the following road, taking it easy.
